From the recording Afterlife: The Evolution of a Song
I start the writing process at my piano, with a pad of paper, a pen, and a handheld recorder to capture any good ideas that come along. I usually mess around with some chord changes or licks until I find something fresh or inspiring. I liked this 6/8 feel with an arpeggiated right hand element, and a wide pattern in the left hand that reaches a 10th. I kept the right hand pattern almost the same and moved the bass notes to provide some variety. Then I tried to sing some vocal ideas over the top.
